Millimeter to Mil to Gram: Change in the Glove Industry

Image
As mentioned in our previous blog, disposable gloves come in a variety of thicknesses. You can measure glove thickness in a variety of ways, however, the most common way in the United States is in mils.  A “mil” is a unit of thickness equal to one-thousandth of an inch (.001 inch). 1 mil = 0.0254 mm So, for example: 2.76 mil glove x 0.0254 = 0.07 mm glove To put it into perspective, an everyday trash bag ranges between 1.2 mils and 1.7 mils, while a much stronger trash bag that offers better tear resistance is between 3 mils and 6 mils. Other examples include a credit card which is around 30 mils thick and a deck of playing cards which is around 750 mils.  Millimeter to Mil In the past, disposable gloves were measured in millimeters, however, it was decided that that was not the most accurate form of measurement due to variations in thickness across a single glove. The switch from millimeters to mils provided a much more accurate measurement. For example, some companies ma

Appendix A: Food Diary Template

Keeping a food journal can be very informative and will help you identify habits—both good and bad Disposable Gloves Wholesale . It can also be helpful in determining food allergies or intolerances, as well as imbalances in the diet and possible sources of deficiencies or excess.  For one week, list all the foods and beverages you consume, and take note of the meals eaten at home versus those out. If you are at a restaurant and can't journal at the time, take a photo with your smartphone.  Having an image will help you recall what you have consumed later. Be as detailed as you can. Be sure to include any alcoholic beverages. I suggest photocopying the chart on the next page and keeping a few copies on hand After recording one week's worth of your diet, step back and look at what you've written.  See if you can spot any trends, patterns, or habits. For example, you might consider: How healthy is my diet? Am I eati

To my loving parents,I've chang my lifestyle

In 2021, I was offered an opportunity to write a book about my work, but my gut feeling was that something wasn't quite right with the timing and I turned down the offer. But I wondered afterward whether I had made a mistake by doing so. Would an offer ever come again?  Did I miss my one chance? Then, two years later my friend Jay Stinnett encouraged me to pursue writing a book. He added, “I know the perfect person to support you on this creative process, and he also happens to be one of my favorite people on the planet. His name is Randy Davila, and he is the president of Hierophant Publishing.”  On May 5, 2021, I met Randy, and I immediately knew it was both the right time and right person. I am forever indebted to Randy for his patience and gentle guidance throughout this journey. Thank you for creating a book that captures my voice and simple essence.  To my husband Ralph, to whom this book is dedicated, I love you more with each passing day. You are the best man I

A sustainable global shift in the physician role

Image
When medical schools place salutogenesis on the same level of importance as pathogenesis, we will see a sustainable global shift in the physician role. Doctors will train in modules on nutrition, exercise, stress management, sleep hygiene, substance intake, and social connectedness. Doctors will represent the healthiest amongst us, serving as the example to their patients. The environments in which they practice medicine ought to be representative of optimal health as well. Medical clinics can be stocked with whole foods and healthy snacks, and hospital cafeterias can be powerhouses of nutrition TPE gloves , providing food that prevents disease and maintains health.  My hope is that one day we'll marvel at how it could have possibly been any other way, much the same way we are astonished at how at one point in time it was acceptable for doctors to smoke while making rounds in the hospital.  Even if it feels like we have a long way to go in how we view medicine and heal

The importance of dietary and lifestyle behaviors

Image
Over time Disposable Gloves Wholesale , the Finnish people grew increasingly aware of the importance of their dietary and lifestyle behaviors Food gloves , made the investments of time, energy, and money, and followed through on their commitment to better health.  These changes resulted in a stunning 73 percent reduction in coronary heart disease mortality in North Karelia specifically and a 65 percent reduction in coronary heart disease mortality in Finland overall from 1972 to 1997.1 There is so much we can learn from and be inspired by in the North Karelia story.  This powerful example illustrates what can be accomplished when communities work together to achieve a common goal. In order to execute a massive global public health success story of this kind, we all need to come together with a common objective in mind: doctors, patients, communities, cities, states, businesses, and governments. I believe doctors and their patients can lead the way, initiating the first ste

The principles of lifestyle medicine

Image
I've shared the turnaround in my own life and the management of my chronic illness through the principles of lifestyle medicine. I credit these changes as the simplest, most direct, and most profound actions for my health and well-being that I have ever undertaken.  When I support the adoption of these changes in my patients, colleagues, friends, and family—and now with the readers of this book—I feel a sense of overwhelming pride and hope. On the difficult days, when I become overwhelmed by the amount of work we have yet to do in the fields of public health, medical education, and health care, I remember one of my favorite stories of societal transformation, which took place over many years in North Karelia, Finland. In the 1960s, the Finnish people became aware that cardiovascular disease was running rampant and that Finland had the highest rate of coronary heart disease mortality in the world. How did this come to be?  After World War II, living standards improved d

Ho'oponopono is that the ancient peoples who advocated it saw it as medicine

Image
Oftentimes our relationships can become strained for a variety of reasons over long periods of time. Perhaps there are things we have said or done which we aren't proud of, but a formal apology may not be necessary, helpful, or even possible.  In these cases, I invite you to try Ho'oponopono, a practice of reconciliation that comes from the indigenous communities of Hawaii and Polynesia. It has been adapted over time to become a practice of self-forgiveness as well.  The word can be translated as “to make right.” At the heart of Ho'oponopono is the recitation of four simple yet powerful phrases—but rather than saying them to the person you have a conflict with, you close your eyes and speak them to yourself while keeping that person in mind.  The phrases are: I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you While I don't know of any scientific study that has measured why or how this works, I do know this is a practice that has been in place for hundr

Loving-kindness meditation is a popular technique to extend forgiveness

Image
Kind thoughts, and love to yourself, to others, and to the entire world. This kind of meditation has its origins in Buddhism, where it is called metta , a Pali word meaning “loving-kindness, goodwill, and friendliness.”  To start, find a spot where you can sit comfortably and be undisturbed for at least ten minutes. Take a few deep breaths and bring your point of focus to the present moment. Try to let all other concerns drop away. Next, imagine a bright point of glowing, peaceful, beautiful light in your heart.  As you breathe, the light expands until it fills your entire body. Sit with this feeling of light and inner peace for a few minutes, and then repeat these positive blessings toward yourself: May I be happy. May I be at peace. May I be safe. May I be healthy (You can change these statements to suit you; just make sure they are positive and uplifting.) Once you have extended these blessings to yourself, think of someone you're close to—your child or parent TPE g

A few more suggestions to shopping food

Image
Prep foods so they're ready to go later, and if you need to go shopping, bring a list and stick to it. When I shop with my patients, they are often surprised by a few habits I live by. Grocery stores are set up to prey on our worst instincts when it comes to food. Ever notice that the produce section is almost always on the right?  That's because most people are right-handed and tend to turn that way first. That may seem like a good thing, but store layout designers know that once we've visited the produce section, with its vibrant colors and healthy fruits and vegetables, we'll feel upbeat, hungry, and righteous about our healthy choices, so we'll be primed to stay in the store longer and say yes to a cart full of meat, dairy, and foodstuffs (which have the highest profit margins in the food industry). 15 These impulse buys are bad for our health and our wallet. So when I go into the store, the first thing I do is turn to the left and pick up offerings

At the top of the pyramid sit nuts and seeds

Image
Which are great sources of good fat, fiber, protein, vitamins, minerals, and other important things like antioxidants and phytosterols. They're at the top of the pyramid, though, because they should make up a smaller portion of our overall diet (we don't want to sit mindlessly in front of the television with a bowl full of cashews, because they are rich in fat and can pack on a lot of calories).  Eat nuts and seeds sparingly and as an add-on, like a garnish. I'll throw a handful of walnuts onto my oatmeal, add some cashews to a veggie stir-fry, or spoon some pine nuts or pumpkin seeds onto a salad to add texture and crunch. Restock Your Pantry with Fresh, Wholesome Foods A good place to begin is in your pantry. Noted chef and government nutrition policy advisor Sam Kass recommends a three-step process: first, purge your pantry (while still keeping a few treats on hand, if desired); second, reorganize to make fresh food more visible and available; and third, pre

Legumes and Whole Grains

Image
Legumes include beans, lentils, and peas. They are a great source of fiber and protein, and they are far less expensive than animal protein per ounce. Interestingly, a cross-cultural, worldwide study conducted by the World Health Organization showed that eating more legumes meant longer lives for the elderly, regardless of their ethnicity.11 Remember the blue zones discussed earlier with extraordinary rates of longevity? We can all emulate the Okinawans, who feast on generous amounts of miso and tofu (traditional foods based on soybeans), and the Sardinians, whose plates are enriched with chickpeas, cannellini beans, and lentils. Whole grains include oats, brown rice, barley, quinoa, buckwheat, wild rice, and millet. It's best to eat these as close to their natural form as possible. When choosing whole grains that are packaged, read the labels. It's not uncommon to find a box of cereal that is labeled “whole grain,” but when you read the label, you find that it is

What do I mean by real food?

Image
As you make these changes, I want you to be sure to choose real food. What do I mean by real food? Well, one of my favorite litmus tests for “real food” is to imagine my own great-grandmother and what she would do if someone handed her a plastic-wrapped Disposable Gloves Wholesale , neon-colored fruit roll-up. She wouldn't even recognize it as food, let alone fruit, and she wouldn't know how to eat it. Real food does not come from a factory or a lab; it comes from nature.  We want to shop for, prepare, and eat food that is in its natural, whole state or as close to it as possible. For some people, this poses an immediate challenge. What if I'm not a good cook? How do I know what's ripe or will taste good in the produce section? Furthermore, some Americans live in what are known as food deserts with limited access to fresh foods (but meanwhile convenience stores with chips and candy bars lurk at every gas station).  The good news is, with a little planning a

To recap Food gloves, here's how to build your plant-based repertoire

Image
Increase the amount and frequency of plants you already enjoy: “I love apples, so I will eat an apple a day PE Gloves .” Revisit plants you haven't tried in some time: “I had cauliflower at a wedding in 2010, and it wasn't terrible.”  Give plants you hate a second chance: “I hated lima beans when I was a kid, but I'm willing to try them again.” Try something new: “I've never tried mango before, but I'm willing to try it in a cabbage mango coleslaw recipe for my tacos.”  Taking a more adventurous and inquisitive approach to food can expand the variety on our plates very quickly. Whenever you find yourself getting bored or feeling limited or deprived, check out a new cookbook, cooking blog, or chef's account on social media.  Try to incorporate different types of cuisines and ingredients. Eating a wide variety of foods is also a great example for any children in your household. Research tells us that children may need to be exposed to a food at least

A brief recap of key ideas plus step-by-step

Image
In the next few chapters, we'll dive into each spoke on the lifestyle medicine wheel YICHANG . At the end of each chapter is a brief recap of key ideas plus step-by-step actions you can take to help you put the changes I will recommend into practice and undergo your own personal transformation in the process.  To that aim, we will start here with a self-assessment. I believe that it's important to take some time to check in honestly with yourself and then physically write out a current assessment of where you are today Synthetic Gloves .  This will give you a baseline to measure your progress toward your goals, and consequently make them more obtainable. Remember, the ultimate goal here is to transform your life Vinyl Gloves , and that will require looking at several different areas. I recommend picking up a notebook or journal especially for the purpose of writing about your own journey of transformation.  Doing so can strengthen your resolve to make changes, an

Social connection can also affect the other spokes on the wheel

Image
For instance, I often teach my patients the importance of fostering relationships with people who will support healthy choices in their lives. In other words, don't go on that lunch date with the friend who pressures you to order that big piece of chocolate cake for dessert. That friend may be a great choice for another type of social outing, but learning to surround yourself with the right people at the right time can help you achieve your overall goals.  I see this in my own practice when I hold a group support meeting. I may have eight patients who attend a group, all with a common set of goals. They may all be diabetics seeking to improve their outcomes. They often talk about how family and friends are not supportive, which makes it that much harder. These groups serve as our local moai, and I witness how these relationships foster positive outcomes. I see these patients begin to meet up for walks, share recipes, talk to one another about what's going on in the

The danger to Drinking,Vitamins and Supplements Drinking Unlike smoking

Image
Alcohol still enjoys a largely positive public image, and is a much more acceptable and often celebrated practice. Raising a glass for a toast or drinking at a football game, a wedding, or a night out with the girls feels normal—alcohol consumption is expected, and abstaining can be isolating, even humiliating.  In reality, excessive alcohol consumption contributes to heart disease, stroke, liver disease, cancer, dementia, and mental health issues like depression and anxiety.11 Just like the messaging we get around diet and food, there can be some confusion about whether consuming alcohol is beneficial.  For instance, there has been some highly publicized research suggesting that red wine may afford some cardiovascular benefit, but you can actually get those same benefits from simply eating red grapes. While some research suggests that drinking wine might increase your HDL (the good cholesterol), there is no doubt that exercise can also do this.  The American Heart Associat
